Haithabu - Niedergang und archäologische Bedeutung - Luftbild | Haithabu wurde 1050 durch einen Konflikt zwischen norwegischen und dänischen Königen schwer beschädigt und 1066 endgültig von den Westslawen geplündert. Danach verlagerte sich die Siedlungstätigkeit nach Schleswig, und Haithabu wurde aufgegeben. - Die Stadt blieb unüberbaut, was die außergewöhnliche Erhaltung archäologischer Funde ermöglichte – besonders von organischen Materialien wie Holz, Leder und Textilien dank des feuchten Bodens. Bis heute sind nur etwa 5 % der Fläche ausgegraben.
